Assessment Policy

Pupils’ work is marked using the criteria shown in the table below. Each assessed piece of work, whether classwork or homework should have two marks, a number from 1 to 5 showing the extent a pupil has understood the task and a letter A to E, indicating the amount of effort that appears to have been given to the task from.

ASSESSMENT POLICY:

Homework should be handed in on the day stated in the homework timetable.

Class work and homework will be marked according to the policy below:

National Curriculum assessment tasks will be assessed according to the criteria outlined by the subject.

GCSE and "A" level answers to examination questions are assessed using Edexcel’s relevant marking schemes.

The department has recently introduced a series of letters illustrated with geographical features that can be sent home for outstanding work or effort in Geography.

Pupils are given guidelines of what is required to reach different National Curriculum levels before embarking on formal assessments.

 5 Excellent work which exceeds the requirements of the task  A Task completed with a great deal of effort and in line with the ability of the individual pupil
 4 The work exhibits complete understanding of the context and demonstration of the target skill  B Task completed conscientiously
 3 The work shows a sound grasp of the subject content and/or demonstration of the target skill  C Task is completed with a satisfactory level of effort
 2 The work has gaps in content/understanding or inaccuracies in the skill being demonstrated  D Task completed with minimum effort
 1 The work exhibits little grasp of the subject context as well as the target skill(s) being inaccurately demonstrated  E Task completed with no real effort

The aim of the department is to follow the assessment of each piece of work with a brief constructive comment.
