Music has always been used to protest. The Civil Rights movement in the USA produced some amazing music that give a very good insight into society and the status of black citizens at the time. At the moment this little collection of songs spans the period 1929-1970.

Fables of Faubus - Charles Mingus Watch/Listen...
The song was written as a direct protest against Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus, who in 1957 sent out the National Guard to prevent the integration of Little Rock Central High School by nine African American teenagers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_of_Faubus)

Young Gifted and Black - Bob and Marcia Watch/Listen...
Bob and Marcia were a Jamaican vocal duo that consisted of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths. They had a #5 UK hit single in 1970 with 'Young, Gifted and Black' which was originally recorded by Nina Simone. Written in memory of Simone's late friend Lorraine Hansberry, author of the play Raisin in the Sun, the song was originally recorded by Simone for her 1970 album Black Gold.

Mississippi Goddam - Nina Simone Watch/Listen...
Released in 1964 as a single and boycotted in several Southern states, ostensibly because of the word 'goddam' in the title. The song is her response to the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi; and the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four black children.
