Assessment

As with all subjects you will, from time to time, find that your teachers will talk about National Curriculum (NC) Levels. All your major written assessements will be marked and awarded a NC Level. At the end of Year 9 you will also be awarded a final teacher assessed NC Level based on your performance over the whole of KS3. We will take into account all the work you have done and look at your portfolios carefully before reaching a final decision but it is not just your written work that will be assessed. We will also pay attention to the way you explain things when you speak and in presentations.

The NC Levels are important but try not to get too worked up about the numbers - they mean nothing in themselves. Concentrate on the descriptions which we have included here. If you can follow these you will soon be able to see what you need to work on, set yourself  some appropriate targets for improvement and get better at doing history. Your teacher will help you if you are not sure about what some parts mean or whether you have really mastered a particular skill.

Marking
What do the marks on your work mean?
Your teachers want you to get better at doing history. Your exercise book will be checked regularly by your teacher, the Head of History and other members of staff. However not all pieces of class and homework can be marked in detail. Sometimes you may only see that your teacher has ticked/signed and dated your work. However when your book is marked in detail you will be provided with constructive comments focusing on your successes and pointing out what you need to do to improve. You will be given time to read, reflect on and respond to marking where appropriate.
You may also be asked to mark either your own work or the work of other pupils. Your teacher will show you how to do this. In addition you will, from time to time, be asked to review your own work and set yourself some targets. This will normally be completed in class time and require you to complete a written sheet.
You must always check your work before handing it in and make any necessary corrections. Key historical terms, names and phrases, etc. will always be checked and corrected when your teacher marks your work in detail. Spelling punctuation and grammar, etc. will not be highlighted in detail in all pieces of work. Your teacher may use these abbreviations when marking your work:

A word circled = There is a spelling error check how to spell this word .
// = You should have begun a new paragraph.
? = Read this again. Does it make sense?
^ = Something has been missed out.
A word or idea underlined with a wavy line = Have you got the right word or idea?
+ = Add in this point that you forgot to include.
One tick = Well-written section - relevant, clear, well made point or accurate example.
Two ticks = Very convincing well supported point.
