Video Games that Created or Changed a Genre

What is this page about?
This is to show and discuss some of the video games which have been hugely influential in their own area and lead to setting new standards.
But what about the really good recent games?
These games may not necessary be the best games ever but are instead the games that influenced gaming or some of the best games, although many are excellent in their own right.
Can I find any of these games?
Many have been released for download on PSN, Xbox Arcade, Wii Shop or for download on the PC.

I do not agree with you on most/some of these!

That is the whole point! These titles are the opinion of one person and are here to provoke discussion. If you think there are more worthy titles or dont agree with the ones here then add a comment with your views. Just remember to make your comments sensible, constructive and non-aggressive.

· Other Influential Titles
This is a list of other titles which are equally influential, but I did not get round to making notes about.

Unreal is worth a mention: probably the first PC game to use hardware accelerated graphics- if you were lucky enough to have a Voodoo graphics card! Until this game came along, we were all running around in software graphics: everything looked "pixely" and blocky. Unreal was smooth and glossy! There were even reflections!

Tetris

Little Big Planet. okay so the story and style can look a little babyish, however, it was the first 3D game that, using some easy-to-use tools, let you create nearly annything you can imagine, over 2 million levels published and a sequal in the works is proof of popularity. sure "the forge" from the halo series allows you full 3D and is great for a FPS, but it only allows the player to select from predefined items, LBP lets the user create an infinite variety of objects, incorporating 3 "layers" in which the character can move forward and back, for a degree of 3D freedom while maintaining it to be incredibly easy to make

how about wipeout (ps) though a rather small market the scifi racer created eyecatching scenery and insane tracks that see the racers racing over ceilings, walls, water and just about any other non conventional racing surface.

the latest in this market was wipeout fury (PSN) and is still going strong with lush graphics and the handling to cope with incredible speeds, not to forget the great scenery.

Mechwarrior Vengeance was a good shooter game

Suggestions:

- Spyro The Dragon - PS1 (1998) Timesplitters: Future Perfect - PS2 (2005)

- Baldur's Gate - PC (1998)

- Age of Empires 2 - PC (1998)

- Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds - PC (2001)

- Star Wars Battlefront 1/2 - PS2 (2004/2005)

- Just Cause - PS2 (2006)

- Tekken - PS1 (1994)

Halo ought to be on there for gameplay and online content, the storyline is pretty average.

Half Life 2 should be an influential title; it was the first game with a gravity gun and was awarded PC game of the decade.
