Key Stage 4 Chemistry

Chemistry taught at key stage 4 (year 10 & 11 pupils) varies a lot.  In a concerted effort to tailor the course to the individual learner's needs, we offer a range of courses.  They all originate from the exam board OCR (and a BTEC from exam board Edexcel) and more details can be found under the table.

GCSE Chemistry = OCR Gateway GCSE Chemistry 'B'  (course code J644)

A single GCSE in Chemistry only, taught at Hartismere as part of the

"Triple Science" program (along with GCSE Biology & GCSE Physics)

GCSE Core Science = OCR Gateway Science 'B' (course code J640)

A single GCSE in "Science" that pupils complete coursework for and sit exams for in Year 10.  Within this they study aspects of Biology (units B1 & B2), Chemistry (units C1 & C2) and Physics (units P1 & P2).  It can be studied at Higher tier (asssessing GCSE grades A* - C) and Foundation tier (GCSE grades C - G).  Some pupils who follow this course will study a second GCSE in year 11 (Additional Science) while others will be offered the chance to study for a BTEC in Applied Science.

GCSE Additional Science = OCR Gateway Additional Science 'B' (course code J641)

A single GCSE in "Science" that develops the ideas covered in "Core" Science and extends pupils with more advanced concepts.  Within this they study aspects of Biology (units B3 & B4), Chemistry (units C3 & C4) and Physics (units P3 & P4).  It can be studied at Higher tier (asssessing GCSE grades A* - C) and Foundation tier (GCSE grades C - G).

BTEC First Cert. in Applied Science = Edexcel BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science

This is a level 2 qualification (equivalent to two GCSE passes at grade C or above - if achieved).  This course is particularly suitable for pupils who find it difficult to remember lots of information for exams and often do better on coursework tasks.  It iis assessed completely by a series of coursework tasks devised and run at Hartismere. There are no exams.
